10. A Surprise

( At least if you're a character in the book. Anyone else might have suspected. )

This is it. This the chapter of catastrophic research fail! Research fail that is not only absurd, but seems to make the events of the story impossible, or at least extremely improbable. Best of all, it's research fail that primarily results from Ms. Beatty's apparent inability to find a map.

( That's right, folks, she didn't even look at a map! )

Another chapter full of fail.  Ms. Beatty really is not going to win any author of the year awards from me.

I am so fond of prejudice. Sooooo fond of it. Soooo very, very fond of it.

Yes, folks, this chapter is a good one. Wherein "good" means "absolutely fucking sucktastic."

Why did I start this? Oh yes, because I've hated this book since I was a kid and the mind boggling research fail - especially at the book's climax - just had to be shared.

( But we're not there yet, sadly. )

Because there's never enough bad writing or bad math!

This chapter is a good example of what's wrong with this book and others like it. It's not so much that the author didn't research the setting (though that is a problem), it's that the author wrote a really, really crappy book. Ms. Beatty can't be bothered to proofread her own writing and so can't be bothered to be consistent. She also continues ( Read more... )

The geography problems continue to pile up, the author's handling of a Native American character makes me uncomfortable, and the writing continues to suck.
